Seele Brennt by kvnvk Seele Brennt by kvnvk
soul burns... [link]

small canvas (6" x 6" or 15.24cm x 15.24cm) finished relatively quickly compared to how long it normally takes me. built up and scraped back down... the original changes so much depending on the light, the gold in the top section has tones from greenish to a tarnished brown and shines like a gem depending on the viewing angle.

oil, acrylic, latex house paint, wood stain, paint marker and spray hair coloring on stretched canvas.

fyi, my work is NOT to be used as stock or texture or a "resource" for derivative works. thanks.

Ha just noticed the title. It's been many years since I've listened to Neubauten - back during the Skinny Puppy era. In fact I remember seeing 'Nivek Ogre" I believe, onstage with KMFDM somewhere in Pontiac, Michigan I think it was.

Ah memories! Did you ever get into Coil? I recall, "Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil", Scatology, Horse Rotovator, and so on as being quasi-Thelemic trance experiments. Fascinating too, was the departure of John Balance - if you're a fan of the ancient Mephistopheles tales.

Maybe too much of that permeated our early years and is only now coming to the surface.

Well good work amigo. Keep shinning.

apparently the painting itself is so awesome no one even notices the title? LOL!

that's cool, I want to say I first started listening to Neubauten in '87 or '88, the "2X4" release, on cassette at that... just kind of "devolved" from there.  I was never really all that into Coil, I tried but the only stuff I was ever able to get into was "How To Destroy Angels" and "The Angelic Conversation".  after Skinny Puppy and the like and E.N. (plus various other groups on the dark, abrasive side) I got into the harsh noise scene, ultimately starting my own project and doing a number of releases (still active at this point as well).  tend to listen to more dark ambient these days although I did get back into Skinny Puppy and a lot of the old industrial acts, seen SP three times recently and Nitzer Ebb when they toured the states a few years ago.

actually mine was bubbling to the surface a good quarter century ago (my how time flies... :-S ) this piece kvnvk.deviantart.com/art/primo… was done between '91-'93 and I had been doing somewhat similar work a dew years prior to that though with more linear, geometric/architectural elements (I've considered posting some of those but don't want people thinking they're new pieces and I've gone off in a different direction).

Nice! Yeah, "how to destroy angels" - such a great title.
Well the larger work you made is equally cool.

After enjoying looking your painting, I was very surprised to see the actual size is 6 inches square. I think what I am trying to stay it has the impact of have very large painting. Nice ARTwork just the same. You are putting together a really nice gallery. A very enjoyable find. :winner:

thank you very much  I have worked on rather large pieces before but find getting that same sort of "presence" in a smaller work can be something of a challenge.

Nice work, very nice tonal values I bet this piece looks amazing in natural sunlight and not in the digital realm, I have several of my own large (10' x 14') yes feet not a typo, I spent some time after I left the USN in the late 80's living in North Cali at my dad's studio and did nothing but paint, hike, and surf. stretched the majority of the canvas for the larger ones myself. I have noticed going back and photographing some of those and digitizing the tonal values are not the same and requires a series of color and light filtering to even get close to the original look.....Cheers

thanks, and sorry for the extremely late reply.  actually while attending the University of Houston I did a number of larger canvases as well, mostly in the 3' x 4' - 5' x 6' range though I did do a couple over 10' in width, including one which was about 8' x 12' and built and stretched them all myself.  haven't had the space or the resources for works that size in a long time.

Most "abstract" art I find juvenile... as in... a 5 year old could do it.

But I love this.

thanks... sorry for the LATE reply, lol! anyway, to be completely honest, I'd tend to agree with that assessment when applied to a lot of the abstract art I see on dA, almost like a "slap-it-out-because-I-can-and-call-it-abstract" sort of mentality. idk, sometimes I'd like to see a little more effort. sure abstract CAN be easy but too often it's used as a crutch for the talentless and lazy, and is why so many people don't take it seriously. every so often I may have a piece come together relatively quickly, such as this very painting, but that's usually the exception and not the rule. I tend to struggle and agonize over each work, going through numerous revisions before settling on something I'd call finished. even then I'll sometimes find I'll become dissatisfied with a piece after the fact, there's a couple in my gallery right now I'm second guessing and may possibly severely rework.

Like when someone draws squiggles in devMURO and calls it abstract? Understandable.
